Snowmass Village, Colo.—The Snowmass Arts Advisory Board awarded $20,000 to three local artists selected as winners of the Town’s artist bike rack competition. Each winning design—five in total—will receive $4,000 to design, fabricate, and deliver artistic bicycle racks in five locations in Snowmass Village.

Winning artists and designs include:

  • Art Burrows,The Cyclist, and Columbian Mammoth
  • Kamber Sukulsky, Intersection and Aspen Leaves
  • Vaughn Shafer, Mammoth Skeleton

“We are very excited to be selected, and happy that our community embraces cycling and other forms of alternative transportation as much as they do,” said Art Burrows of Ajax Design and Communications.

The Snowmass Arts Advisory Board called on artists through a request for proposal. This contest was launched in honor of Aspen/Snowmass’ selection as the overall start of USA Pro Challenge cycling race, the increasing popularity of bicycling, and the need for safe and secure bike parking in Snowmass Village. Professional and amateur Colo. artists of all backgrounds were invited to participate, and talented designers submitted 30 creative ideas to blend art with a needed public amenity.

“SAAB was thrilled by the submissions we received from the many talented artists. We can’t wait to see the winning designs displayed in our community and look forward to showcasing even more artistic talent in the Village in the future,” said Kelly Neilson, SAAB co-chair.

A selection committee comprised of representatives from the Arts Advisory Board, Snowmass Village Town Council, Town staff, and Related Colo. and Westin Snowmass Resort—property owners of two sites where selected bike racks will be displayed voted on the winning designs. Safety, maintenance, and environmental stewardship were primary criteria in the selection process.

Next, the Town will determine install specifications in collaboration with various landowners responsible for bike rack sites. Then, with the winning artists, they will set the specific time frame for rack fabrication and delivery.

"We were happy to be a host sponsor of the Pro Cycling Challenge events here in Snowmass Village and think we have made a great case for hosting the event again," said Dwayne Romero president of Related Colo. "We think biking is a growth asset in our summer economy and we support this art project to promote biking."

Snowmass Village can expect to see these works of art throughout Town well before the next biking season.
