Back to School

Stop for the School Bus. It's the Law.

School is back in session, and the Snowmass Village Police Department watches school buses closely to make sure our children stay safe. Please make sure you do your part too by driving safely and following the law. Not stopping for a school bus can result in a fine and penalty of up to six (6) points against your license.

On a two lane road without a separated median, traffic in both lanes, in both directions, are required to stop for the bus. Traffic should begin to stop when the bus lights flash yellow. Traffic must remain stopped while the flashing red lights on the bus are present. Please take a minute and stop for the school bus. You can find details on the school bus stopping law in the Colorado Drivers Handbook.

David Peckler receiving award

Transit Professional of the Year

David Peckler Receives Honors From CASTA

David Peckler, TOSV Transit Director, was recently named the Transit Professional of the Year at the Colorado Association of Transit Agencies (CASTA) 36th Annual Colorado Transit Awards ceremony in Grand Junction, CO. The CASTA Awards Program recognizes the contributions of individuals and agencies in Colorado with outstanding programs or projects, or who have made notable contributions to transit.

The Transit Professional of the Year award is the most competitive of the annual awards. David Peckler has truly been a pioneer as one of the original Town of Snowmass Village staff members when the Village Shuttle started in 1979. In addition to being a leader for the Town, David has also been a transit leader in the state providing well-reasoned opinions and direction to other organizations including CASTA. The nomination noted that David’s strong leadership skills have been evident as he has worked to develop an outstanding transit organization. This award is especially fitting as David will be retiring this year after a remarkable career that has had far reaching impacts. Congratulations, David!

Winter is Coming

Be Ready for Winter Driving Conditions

Winter driving conditions are just around the corner. Colorado and Snowmass Village traction laws require vehicles have snow tires, traction devices, or AWD capabilities from September 1st - May 31st. In addition to having adequate snow tires, there are a number of things you can do to be prepared for winter roads:

Winter Driving Tips:

  • Find your ice scraper and keep it handy. Thoroughly clean snow and ice from your windshield, windows, mirrors, and lights before driving
  • Make sure you have plenty of de-icer windshield wiper fluid
  • Check your windshield wipers, and replace them if they are worn or cracking
  • Pack a winter safety kit with things like water, extra warm clothes, a flashlight, and a sleeping bag
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full
  • Drive carefully when icy conditions are present.
  • Approach intersections slowly, and double check for traffic and pedestrians before pulling out into an intersection or roadway.
  • Never crowd the plow. Give them space to work.
  • Don’t tailgate other vehicles. Allow for plenty of space between vehicles in case traffic slows or comes to a stop.
  • You can also catch a ride with the Village Shuttle. Drivers work hard to keep shuttles running during snow storms. And... It's free!
